Hanging Lake Trail

Suspended on the edge of Glenwood Canyon's cliffs is a clear turquoise lake, surrounded by greenery, filling up from waterfalls that spill in from above. It appears as if you could jump in and the water would be only up to your ankles, though it's roughly 30 feet deep. There is no entering the lake itself to protect the breathtaking sight.

The trailhead begins after a nice stroll on a paved sidewalk in between towering rock formations. Although the trail only a mile in length to the lake, the trail is steep and VERY rocky, which made for a difficult journey. As we were huffing and puffing, the people coming down were quite literally running. "They must be crazy," I thought.

With about 90% of the trail complete, we came to a plateau which overlooked the valley between the two rock mountains beside us. It was the perfect place to take a quick breather before finishing the last 10%.

From the plateau was a nearly straight up climb to reach the lake that lay quietly aside the mountain. It took about 45 minutes to reach the top. We snacked and watched the water shimmering for a while, before making our way back down.

We became the crazy runners. It was hard not to, considering how steep the trail was. Naturally, we made it back to the trailhead in 20 minutes.
