The Colorado River is about 1,450 miles in length and runs from Colorado, through the Grand Canyon, to Mexico, but the city of Page has, arguably, the best view of the river. About 10 minutes West of the Lower Antelope Canyon is the Horseshoe Bend. There is a large parking area off Highway 89, and from there it’s only a .6 mile hike to view the incredible horseshoe-shaped bend of the Colorado River.
The hike is wide open with little to no available shade, so we made sure to bring water along. We could see people off in the distance, but since the Colorado River is below the overlook, we couldn’t see it until we were right up to the edge. Let me tell you…the view takes your breath away. The overlook is 1,000 feet above the river below, and provides no guard rails so your view is unobstructed and completely natural. The sun lights up the water, trees and rocks around the canyon omitting dozens of shades of blues, greens, reds and oranges.
Even though this destination is popular, the rim around the Horseshoe Bend is large so you are easily able to walk around and find your own spot to sit and relax.
